Quite proud of this one, only 1 sketchy mix which isn’t bad considering I hadn’t listened to the tunes all the way thru before jumping in to mixing with them. I’ve just discovered a whole new set of artists and think this might be a new sub genre of house I’ll stick with for quite some time! Inspired by a promo mix that I heard by a london DJ called Russ Chimes (kudos to his remixes, all suberb!)

I recently was mildly concerned to find that in one month I’ve served in the region of 50GB of traffic from this site….. Now I host my own podcasts so thats obviously going to account for a lot of traffic (I’m looking at moving the podcasts off to a free hosting solution). But more worrying was that a single IP address seems to have been responsible for downloading 6GB for the month of March (202.108.43.220). A whois lookup reveals that this IP address orginates in China. A grep of my access logs shows that they kept downloading the same mp3 from the site which accounts for the traffic. My question is this… Is this a DoS attempt or is this some sort of traffic aggregator/proxy that all chinese traffic is routed through? I’m not sure if I should be blocking this with iptables or whether that would actually be detrimental to chinese users (who apparently are big fans of the trance mix I did a while ago?!)

Anyway - perhaps I’ll just shift the enclosures over to a free hosting supplier and let them worry about it. I need the bandwidth back and having looked into the cost of renting some webspace rather than using my home broadband connection I’ve decided its too expensive.

I’ve also introduced robots.txt after discovering that for the month of march Google, Yahoo & MSN are responsible for nearly 7GB of upload bandwidth… 7GB!!! - a quick search through the logs indicates that they are not pulling mp3s down but they do seem to have an appetite for the m4as (enhanced podcasts)….

Conclusion: Move the enclosures to seperate hosting, update robots.txt, possibly update iptables to band china(?) and I should hopefully get back a lot of lost bandwidth without having to incur the cost of dedicated hosting.

As my girlfriend was in Portugal this weekend I had a lot of time on my hands so decided to play around with my decks again. Having just convinced my mate Jon that he should part with nearly a grand in cash for his DJ setup he came round with his latest ebay purchase to check that it was all working ok. He was nice enough to leave his DJM-600 with me whilst he waits for SSL and his technics 1210s to turn up and I have to say I’m massively impressed with it…. I’ve still got a pretty crappy behringer mixer and this just puts it to shame. The acoustics, filters and effects are amazing. So good that I think I’m going to have to buy one…. (thanks Jon!)

This weekend felt like summer was almost hear so expect more of this sort of stuff as the Ibiza anthems for 2007 start to get churned out.

Another podcast for your listening pleasure. No playlist this time because I’ve actually managed to create an enhanced podcast which has the track names/markers & album art embedded in the podcast. The downside? Its an .m4a file which means you might only be able to play it with iTunes….

Here is a neat feature from beatport! I use beatport to buy a lot of the tracks I DJ with. They have a much larger collection of tunes than djdownload which is the other site that I use. The site used to be US only localised so I find that there is defintley an american bias towards the tracks when you look at most downloaded etc. I’m sure this will balance out over time assuming they are tracking UK playbacks seperately to US playbacks. I’ve created this one as a House/Top downloads page.

Seems like a cool way to drive traffic to their site and its quite a neat feature to embed on a blog page.

Whilst looking at Warrens latest VLOG I noticed that there was a link to Ben Haines blog… so I thought I’d check it out…. and there on the right hand side I already find that Ben has added a link to www.adamcoates.com. The www subdomain was actually displaying a page from Googles apps for your domain. I love apps for your domain for the gmail side of things, but decided the webhosting was a bit limited. Anyway rather than ask Ben to update his link to point to adamcoates.com I’ve updated the DNS so that www.adamcoates.com will now resolve to the same thing. If you wanted the old site, its still available.

On the assumption that Ben will probably notice incoming links from this site (hello Ben!) I’ve reciprocated by adding a link to both Ben’s blog and also Andrew Rowson’s blog (another ex Reuters colleague). It really is a small world and I’m actually slightly disturbed by the number of us who have blogs now….. surely we should be spending the time creating some dodgy startup that my current employer can pay a small fortune for?!
Ben/Andrew - leave a comment if you do read this, (as Ben is also using wordpress I’m pretty sure he’ll notice the new inbound link fairly quickly)
